Dr. Zuyu Zhao received his B.S. degree from Fudan University in 1982, Class 77.He came to US in 1983 with the World Bank Scholarship and graduated from Northwestern University with Ph.D. degree of physics in 1990. He then spent two and half year working at Harvard University as post-doc and set a new lab pursuing Bose-Einstein condensation on spin polarized hydrogen.Dr. Zhao joined Janis Research Company in 1993 and focused on developing custom ultra-low temperature facilities for the research and science community.He is currently the Board of Director and Executive Vice-President-Principal scientist of the company.He had been elected as member of the AIP <<Physics Today>> Advisory Committee Member from 7/1/2007 to 6/30/2013.
Topic1：1、Ultra-Low Temperature Engineering and Its Applications in Physics: from Classical He-3 Research to Frontier Physics
ULT technologies have been developed shoulder to shoulder with helium physics research (where the ULT physics research originally started), and they have found themselves with much broader applications now.This talk starts with an example of applying ULT technology in classical He-3 physics research, followed by a few examples of its applications in contemporary frontier Physics research, such as ULT-STM systems in high magnetic fields, Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) below 1K, cosmology physics, etc. Temperature measurements on LT/ULT will be discussed.
Topic2：2、Ultra-low Temperature Facilities in High Magnetic Fields
High magnetic field (e.g. 32 tesla and higher) has become an indispensable “tools” in many research areas. Most of these magnets has a small room temperature bore, typically 32 ~ 38 mm in diameter. At the same time, the user wants lower and lower temperatures and larger and larger sample spaces. We will discuss various challenge when a ULT facility is integrated into the high field magnet and how they are resolved, such as: Dimensions, Magnetism, Eddy current(heating and stress from magnet quenches), Thermometry and etc.
Topic3：3、Introduction of ULT System Design
Ultra-low temperature (ULT) facilities have drawn more and more attention since lower temperature has become a more and more demanding parameter in many research area. There is a broad interest on the (ULT) facilities design and fabrication, while at the same time many questions have been brought up since not too many experienced ULT scientist/engineer are available. This seminar will discuss a few selected (but non-published) topics with common interest with technical details. Since it is not possible to cover all issues in (ULT) facilities design and fabrication, discussions after the seminar is available.
